Who are we?
What is this? |
We are so glad you've found our little grassroots initiative to bring a bit more visibility to the LGBT* community and allies of the alberta foothills. Our goal is to empower individuals, create local awareness, and host some fabulous events. We are super excited to see this group grow and become something amazing!
A note from Marissa:
Growing up in the Foothills, I always thought that we are great at silently embracing - without actually acknowledging - the diversity of the Foothills but never can I remember celebrating it. When I moved back, this was increasingly on my mind as I watch a new generation of queerlings growing up with the same lack of representation as I had. We live in a rural area and it is harder to connect with the Community than in urban areas but in this age it is ridiculous that you could go to a Town's website, or the local social media groups, looking for resources and nothing comes up when you search “LGBT” in all its variations. It was frustrating, so I thought that maybe together we can change that. Nothing crazy, just a presence. You know.. the old we're here, we're queer kinda thing. With an increasing population and change in the zeitgeist, I didn’t think this lack of Queer visibility in the Foothills didn't need to be the case anymore and so we hosted the Foothills' first Pride event in 2017 at the Ethel Tucker Park in Okotoks. Let's keep bringing visibility to our Community and work together to be Proud in the Foothills! |
